Today, December 6, 2024, our community mourns the loss of Christopher Collings—a human being whose life was more than his worst moment. His execution at ERDCC in Bonne Terre represents a stark reminder of the profound failures within our criminal justice system.
Chris was not simply a case number or a convicted person. He was a father, a son, an uncle, and a friend. During his time at Potosi Correctional Center, he demonstrated something our justice system often overlooks: the remarkable capacity for human transformation.
Behind prison walls, Chris became a beacon of support and kindness. His relationships and personal growth told a story of redemption that our current system seems reluctant to acknowledge—that people are capable of profound change.
The legal process leading to Chris's execution is riddled with concerns that should give any advocate for justice pause. Critical legal failures marred his case, including:
- Withholding of crucial evidence
- Questionable testimony that shaped the narrative
- A sentencing process that appeared arbitrary and fundamentally unfair
The disparity between Chris's sentence and that of his co-defendant, David Spears, further illuminates the capricious nature of capital punishment.
We hold deep compassion for Rowan Ford's family and the immeasurable pain of their loss. Yet, we maintain an unwavering belief: executing Christopher Collings does not heal this tragedy. Another death cannot restore what was lost.
State-sanctioned violence is not justice. It is a continuation of the very harm we claim to prevent. Chris's execution does not make our communities safer. Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of violence that erodes our collective humanity.
Missourians to Abolish the Death Penalty stands resolute. We advocate for a justice system that recognizes human dignity, values rehabilitation, and understands that every life has inherent worth.
To Chris's family and loved ones: Your grief is valid. Your pain matters. And Chris mattered.
In solidarity and hope for a more just future.
